Antivirus software is critical for the security of your PC

Antivirus software has become an essential part of proper PC security and etiquette.  It doesn't matter if your machine is at home or in the office if you don't have proper anti virus software installed on your machine you will be attacked.  When you are attacked, your computer will most likely be hijacked and used to spread trojan horses, worms to attack other unprotected computers.

Does this sound extreme?  Does it sound unlikely?  Well it is not.  The most common plague on the internet now (besides popup windows and spyware) are internet worms and Trojan horses.  What is special about these is that they are specifically designed to find and attack computers that do not have antivirus protection.

Exactly how they do it is too detailed for this page to explain (but the free antivirus report explains it clearly).  Basically they get into your system either by email (sent from another unprotected computer) or through internet downloads (like software, screen-savers and the like). 

Once inside, trojan horses and internet worms access unprotected parts of your computer system and then duplicate themselves, send themselves to other computers, and generally do damage to your machine.

Keep in mind that viruses and such don't care about PCs with antivirus protection.  They just randomly spread around until they find a PC that is NOT PROTECTED and then set up shop.  When you do the math, it is really quite easy to see how they can spread so quickly.

Most people don't realize that they have anywhere from hundreds to several thousands of email addresses living on their PC.  Most of these are found in temporary files that are created when we surf.  The rest are in our email systems.  Trojans and worms simply scan your system for all of these and then send out personalized emails (from you) to all addresses found.

If these emails infect only 10 other machines then you have already caused a 10x increase in the infections.  When each of those are hijacked the result is a 100x increase in infections.  And this is only after 2 waves of attack.  The attacks NEVER stop.

Blaster, code red, nimda and many others are all still highly active months and even years after their release.  All because people still do not have proper protection against viruses installed on their machines.

Forget the 'politics' of viruses, trojans, spyware and the like.  It simply does not matter that people shouldn't be creating this kind of software.  They are - end of story.  If your PC is not protected with adequate software protection against viruses, trojans and such, you will be a victim (and as a result, part of the problem too).

The simple fact is if anyone can afford a PC and a monthly internet fee, that person can also afford a good quality antivirus package (most of which are less than 2 months internet charge).
